The Biltmore during autumn with fall foliage

1. Visit the Iconic Biltmore Estate

Nothing defines Asheville quite like the Biltmore Estate, the largest private home ever constructed in America. A long and storied history follows the gorgeous mansion and we highly recommend a visit to see this unmistakable landmark in all its glory. It is easily one of our most popular tourist attractions, and for good reason! To this end, we gladly offer a free discount to all of our guests as a part of their “hospitality pricing” so you can visit the Biltmore for less! See the Gilded Age at its most glamorous with a self-guided audio tour, access to the extensive gardens, a visit to their local winery, Antler Hill, and complimentary parking. A must-visit for history buffs, lovers of classical architecture, or anyone looking to shake up their getaway with something out of the ordinary.

2. Take a Waterfall Hike

See the beauty of nature on a hike at Chimney Rock Park and take in stunning views. They have a variety of trails for all skill levels and plenty of wildlife, so be sure to bring your camera in case you spot any local birds or other creatures native to the area. The star of the show is Hickory Nut Falls, a 404-foot waterfall that is one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi and is truly a sight to behold. The trail up to it features generally moderate terrain but is a brisk 1.4-mile round trip and shouldn’t take most more than an hour. Don’t miss out on this awe-inspiring attraction and others here like the park’s namesake, Chimney Rock, where you have a bird’s-eye view of the valley below, and can also watch the sunrise or sunset!

3. Have Your Own Oktoberfest

With so many fantastic breweries in the area, you can curate your very own Oktoberfest celebration and go on a tour for some tasty microbrews as well as recognizable favorites. Both New Belgium Brewing and Sierra Nevada are here as well as local establishments like the excellent BearWaters Brewing Company, Wedge, and many more! Autumn is an opportune time for beer lovers as many of the breweries have special seasonal drafts you can only try during this time of year. Check out our comprehensive Asheville brewery guide for more information, get ideas on where to go, and create a custom beer trail for all the spots you want to visit.

4. Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway

Take a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway and experience America’s favorite drive, winding its way through nearly 500 miles and two states. Asheville is located at the southernmost part of the Parkway and at the end of the road, only a 50-minute drive away, is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day out of driving this one-of-a-kind road with so much to see, all from the comfort of your car.

5. Spend the Afternoon in Waynesville

Nearby Waynesville is a great spot to stop by if you happen to be driving the Blue Ridge Parkway as it’s right nearby, but it’s certainly worth visiting regardless! A charming little town that’s great for an afternoon spent exploring, checking out the various local shops, or stopping for a bite to eat. The town is full of trees that line the streets and the fall foliage adds a cozy atmosphere that is just waiting for the perfect photo.
